The Morgenstern Bat is a weapon found in ObsCure and ObsCure II.
Information[]
ObsCure[]
The Morgenstern bat is a special variant of the Baseball Bat. It can only be acquired after beating the game once, replacing the baseball bat found in the student's cafeteria when playing on Special Mode.
Covered with nails, studs and blades, one would think that it can deal more damage than the other melee weapons in the game, however, according to the game's difficulty configuration files, it actually doesn't. This still has to be confirmed however, because it is entirely possible that the game has its damage values hardcoded.
Since it can be only obtained in the "Special Mode" it's considered Non-Canon.
In the Basic Version of ObsCure (the one that only came out in Germany and Spain), the Morgstern Bat resembles a medieval mace, both in its pre-rendered item form and in its in-game model.
This was later changed in the Improved Version (the one that was released in the rest of the world), replacing the weapon with the spiked bat.
Finally, in the Steam Version (which was probably based on the German-Spanish PC Version), the model of the medieval mace was replaced with the one of the spiked bat, but the texture wasn't modified accordingly, making it look glitchy. Not only that but the image in the inventory and the Extras menu weren't changed either: they kept the medieval mace everywhere except for the in-game model.[1]
ObsCure II[]
In this game, the Morgenstern bat is found again, but with a different name, "Spiked Bat". It can be obtained as a sort of "secret" weapon when playing as Jun, just before she is killed by an Amorphous. When Sven and Mei go to Fallcreek University to save the latter's sister, Jun, one must try to reach the dorm as quickly as possible, before the girl is killed. If they succeed, Jun will be thrown to the basement by an Amorphous, at which point you will briefly play as the girl and you'll be able to grab the Morgenstern bat, which, after her death can be recovered and will be available for the rest of the game, up until the point where you lost all your weapons after the fake ending credits.
It is the best choice among the melee weapons, it offers a great power against smaller enemies and even those of respectable size. Many creatures die with a single stroke of this bat covered in studs and blades.
Assuming Jun's death in the basement is canon, the appearance of the Morgenstern Bat is canon.
Final Exam[]
In Final Exam, the Morgenstern bat is the first melee weapon available for every character. It is described as the official bat of Leafmore Sharks. It's a weapon balanced between good handling and attack power.
Trivia[]
- A Morgenstern (morning star) is any of several medieval club-like weapons consisting of a shaft with an attached ball adorned with one or more spikes. Each used, to varying degrees, a combination of blunt-force and puncture attack to kill or wound the enemy. Both versions of the bat would fit this type of weapon, although the "spiked bat" version looks more like a home-made version of it, usually the real-life spiked morgstern bats are more symmetrical and only really have spikes, not blades.
- Morgenstern is also a German surname derived from the Middle German words "morgen", meaning "morning", and "stern", meaning "star".
- The Morgenstern Bat is the only unique weapon to be present in all games of the series (Even those that aren't canon).
- While it's unknown why the bat was changed between ObsCure's versions, it's possible that the originally ball mace was a remnant of ObsCure's beta, where the game had a little bit of a more cartoonish and medieval look. The spiked bat may have seemed like a more realistic version to have in the game, more fitting as a weapon that a bunch of students could improvise.
